I’m a cultural anthropologist with a doctorate from Harvard; I’ve done ethnographic research in Latin America and speak Spanish. My scholarship is on social movement strategy amid political change, and the multiple meanings of democracy. I’m an award-winning author and worked as a university professor for 15 years.

My work supports immigrant rights: detention release, deportation defense, protection of asylum, wellbeing of refugees. I co-created a network of faith institutions to prevent deportations and served as director of immigration justice at a nonprofit. Broadly speaking, human rights and racial justice issues are very important to me.
Adventure!
Adventure
I love being out in the wilderness. Favorite trips have been kayaking the Virgin Islands, hiking in India, cycling Southeast Asia, scuba diving in Mexico, and backpacking US national parks. In the future, I’d like to cycle El Camino de Santiago, canoe-safari in Botswana, dive the Great Barrier Reef, kayak the Galápagos Islands, and swim with dolphins in the Azores.
